Fundraising

Fundraising is essentially the process of gathering or soliciting money or other items through requesting donations from different individuals, businesses, government agencies and charitable foundations. However, fundraising can also cover the processes of the identification and the solicitation of investors and other sources of capital business enterprises.

Today, many non-profit organizations make use of fundraising or fundraiser events to obtain the money, funds or goods that they need for their operations. Their operations could include a wide array of interests for philanthropic or religious groups, research organizations, political campaigns and public broadcasters. A couple of examples of charitable organizations would include those that give student scholarship merit awards either for athletic or for academic achievement, those that provide disaster relief, those that tackle humanitarian concerns, those that express support for human rights and those which do research.

If you are planning to hold a fundraising event, then you need to consider a couple of things to make sure that it would be successful. Here are some of the ideas that could help you out.

1. Come up with an estimate of how much money you need to raise and set a goal that you would like to achieve with your fundraising event aside from raising money. Do you want to get people to help out with your cause or organization? Through listing down your fundraising goals, you would have an easier time evaluating the products and programs which could be most suitable for your cause or organization.

2. You also need to make sure that you start your planning early on. This is an excellent fundraising idea as doing so would make sure that each aspect of your fundraising event or program would be taken care of, avoiding problems later on. You could also get a board of directors who would be overlooking all of the aspects of the fundraising event. This would make things more organized.

3. As you choose what type of product or program to use, make sure that it would be one which would be appealing to different types of people and companies. This would assure you of potentially raising more funds. Some of the more popularly used ideas in fundraising events would be selling cookies or candy, offering car wash services and selling small but useful home products.

4. Keep in mind that advertising is important in ensuring the success of your fundraising event. You can advertise through making flyers, putting up posters and making radio or television commercials. You can look into advertising through social networking sites or you can set up a website or a blog that could help in promoting your fundraising event to a wider audience.

Some of the most successful fundraising events would include: Band Aid in 1984, Live Aid in 1985 and Sport Aid in 1986, all of which were held for the famine relief in Ethiopia; Walk Against Want in Australia, which is an annual event which is held to support Oxfam Australia which is an independent organization that works with communities located all over the globe in humanitarian relief efforts, development projects and advocacy campaigns; Red Nose Day, which is the fundraising efforts of Comic Relief and calls for people to donate in exchange for plastic or foam red noses that they can wear during the day; and Christian Aid Week, which is an annual fundraising door-to-door drive which is done by the charity organization Christian Aid.
